Background of the study
Globalization has accelerated cultural and linguistic exchanges worldwide, leading to profound semantic changes in many languages. In Northern Nigeria, the Hausa language is experiencing semantic shifts as a result of increased contact with global languages, media, and technology. Traditional words and expressions are gradually acquiring new meanings or losing their original connotations in the face of modern influences (Usman, 2023). This study investigates the impact of globalization on semantic evolution in Hausa, examining how external influences such as international media, migration, and educational reforms drive changes in word meanings and conceptual frameworks. Ethnographic fieldwork, combined with corpus analysis of broadcast media and digital content, will be used to trace semantic trends over time. The research also explores the implications of these changes for cultural identity and communication efficiency among Hausa speakers. By situating the study within broader theories of language change, it seeks to illuminate the adaptive mechanisms that languages employ in response to globalization while also highlighting potential threats to linguistic heritage (Abdulrahman, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although globalization is widely acknowledged as a catalyst for semantic change, there is limited systematic research on its effects on the Hausa language in Northern Nigeria. Preliminary evidence indicates that significant shifts in word meanings are occurring, which may undermine cultural continuity and lead to communication challenges. This study aims to document these changes and explore their underlying drivers.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of globalization and language evolution in Hausa. Its findings will inform language policy and educational programs aimed at preserving indigenous semantic heritage while adapting to modern influences.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to examining semantic change in the Hausa language in Northern Nigeria. It does not cover phonological or syntactic aspects of language evolution.
